  • In 1934, Joaquín Torres-García returned to Uruguay after forty years in Europe and the United States. He wrote, lectured, and exhibited widely during this final phase of his career and established the Association of Constructive Art as an outlet for his ideas about rational structure and symbolic references to nature. In his late works he broke away from the grid format that had informed his earlier abstract compositions but continued to rely on strong outlines to define flat shapes. 1943 America recalls the wooden toys he produced in the 1920s. Their basic geometric shapes are re-imagined in paint as components of a vibrantly colored steamship.
