This sculptural, handmade coffeepot is a dramatic example of post-World War II silver design at a time of experimentation and widespread adoption of modern styles. Its free form represents the push toward organic modernism, in which the contours of the human body replaced early modernist hard edges. John Prip was a fourth-generation silversmith and served a traditional apprenticeship in Denmark. A designer at Reed and Barton in Taunton, Massachusetts, he taught at RISD from 1963 to 1980. As artist, teacher, and designer for industry, Prip provided his students with a new model for the role of craftsman in relation to mass production.
