Esherick’s furniture, sculpture, and architectural interiors combine tradition with cutting-edge modern art concepts. Because he pursued handwork during the age of mass production and modern technology, Esherick is considered an early contributor to the renaissance of American craft. More concerned with shape and expression than with the art world or volume of output, Esherick preferred to fashion meticulous and unique works for like-minded clients. This music stand is a rare exception, being one of twenty-four produced in edition with the help of a studio assistant. The prototype was created for a cellist friend, so Esherick thoughtfully included a shelf to hold her drink.
