Born in Colombia, Fernando Botero studied art in Madrid and has lived for many years in New York and Paris. His paintings are known for their impossibly rounded figures. Both Botero’s subject matter and style contrast starkly with the sinewy, working-class subjects of Social Realism that dominated Colombian art of the early twentieth century. Until recently, Botero’s subjects have tended to be those depicted in traditional genres such as portraiture and still life. The Pinzón Family takes the idea of a typical 1960s Colombian middle-class family as its subject. The figures are posed as if about to resume a Sunday stroll within an ordinary landscape setting.
