Dale Chihuly, American, Dove Gray Seaform Set, 1982, Blown, colored glass; 43.2 x 91.4 x 76.2 cm (17 x 36 x 30 inches), Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel N. Chase 84.232
In the four decades since he graduated from RISD, no artist can claim to have brought as much popular attention to American art glass as Dale Chihuly. The Slate Gray Seaform Set with its sixteen nesting glass pieces is from Chihuly’s Macchia (spotted) series, and it exemplifies both the technical virtuosity and whimsical beauty of his work. Due to its scale, this multipart sculpture was created through a studio collaboration. One of Chihuly’s major contributions to contemporary art is his role in moving blown glass out of the realm of small, precious objects and into vibrant, large-scale environmental sculptures and signature installations. These installations require a team approach to glass blowing, which he learned as a Fulbright fellow at the Venini glass factory in Venice.
