Miyake has been critically acclaimed as the most innovative and visionary fashion designer of the last fifty years. An advocate of incorporating new technologies, new materials, and new processes into the world of clothing and body adornment, his garments may engulf, disguise, expose, or transform the body. In this design for the Pleats Please Guest Artist Series, Miyake collaborated with photographer and video artist Yasumasa Morimura, whose collage image of a self-portrait and a neoclassical nude by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres defines the dress front. Fashion and art interact to create layered impressions as the body inhabiting the dress adds dimension and movement to the garment and the image it carries.
