The inscription on the pedestal of the sculpture in this image identifies the sitter as Andries Rademaker, an Antwerp notary and collector who was distantly related to the artist by marriage. Admitted to the Painters’ Guild in Antwerp in 1658, Jeanne Vergouwen may have begun her career by portraying members of her family. She depicted Rademaker naturalistically, with a somber palette and dressed in the black appropriate to his profession. The one flourish in the painting is the man’s gesture. It may indicate that he owned the statuette, or perhaps that he is about to speak. Both possibilities point to his refinement and appreciation for the arts.
