Vessels used for eating and drinking were common grave gifts during the Geometric Period. This wine jug was probably used at the graveside meal or for pouring wine to extinguish the funeral pyre. On the central panel, two horses are depicted tethered to a tripod. A young goat jumps above the horses’ heads, while two water birds hover over the horses’ backs. The horse was a symbol of status and wealth because only landowners could afford to keep one. Other elements were purely decorative, such as the concentric circles on the sides.
