Photography by Emma Hogarth

2 – 3 pm, Contemporary Art Gallery

Part of Locally Made’s One Room.

In Demo & Discourse, artists, designers, and experts from across disciplines and mediums share examples of their work and talk about process.

“the thing of the past” is a performance event in which a performer’s image is mediated in two contrasting forms: a shadow image innately tied to the movement of the body in real time; and a digitally mediated projection that uses custom software to layer still and moving live imagery. The resulting image displays fragments of singular and compounded time, tying the ever newly present to the continuum of the past. This presentation of “the thing of the past” will be a structured improvisation performed by dancer/choreographer Ali Kenner Brodsky.Emma Hogarth

Free with museum admission.

Emma Hogarth is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Providence, RI. She holds an MFA in Digital+Media from Rhode Island School of Design, and a Bachelor of Visual Arts, first class honors, from Sydney College of the Arts. After graduating from SCA, Emma moved to New York City where her artistic path took a detour through an extended study of dance and performance. Drawing on a deeply interdisciplinary background, Emma’s practice engages performance, drawing, glass, video and installation work, often combining media or placing it in dialog in the installation space. Her recent projects have involved processes of translation between “traditional” and “new” reproductive imaging technologies, highlighting each media’s inherent relationship to performance, documentation, time and memory. Emma’s projects have been presented in the space of the gallery, the theater and the urban public arena in New York, Sydney and New England. Emma currently teaches in Foundation Studies at RISD.
