 Pendleton - large

Pendleton House was built in 1906 to display Charles L. Pendleton's (1846-1904) remarkable collection of 18th- and 19th-century furniture and related decorative arts. Pendleton House also showcases the Museum's outstanding collection of American painting and sculpture, Gorham silver, English ceramics, Chinese export porcelain and French wallpaper.

Recognized as the earliest example of an American "wing" in any museum, the historic building has been beautifully refurbished inside and out, a process that has taken two years. Gloriously visible are freshly painted and papered rooms, new window treatments and bed hangings, and conserved and reupholstered furniture. Other new features include properly lit exhibition cases for ceramics, a gallery devoted to the Museum's extraordinary collection of American silver, and improved gallery labels.

A new connecting gallery provides elevator access to the second floor of Pendleton House for the first time ever. Less obvious, but absolutely vital, are its new state-of-the-art HVAC, electrical/data, fire, and security systems; UV-filtering glass window panes; refurbished staff offices; and new security vault for metalwork.

The reinstallation of Pendleton House was made possible by generous support from the Ida Ballou Littlefield Memorial Trust, Champlin Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Institute of Museum and Library Services, and Brunschwig & Fils.
