Braque developed an interest in representing common objects as flat, geometric shapes while collaborating with Picasso on the development of an early Cubist style. This 1918 still life indicates his ongoing fascination with ambiguous arrangements of familiar household items. He superimposes a plate of fruit, a textile fragment, a folded newspaper, and a shifting tabletop on a diamond-shaped field that is pierced to reveal a dark background. The composition intentionally, and wittily, resembles Braque’s own work in collage, in which scraps of paper and fabric were glued to the canvas, then painted or left untouched. Here he plays with the decorative pattern of red dots on a green cloth by painting it onto the rim of the platter. Through these techniques and through a subtle negation of spatial relationships he rejects the order and illusionistic reality of traditional still-life compositions and reinforces the abstract effect of his construction.
In this painting, Braque represents a tilted table top on which he has placed a plate of fruit, a textile fragment, and a folded newspaper. By superimposing their flat, geometric shapes on a diamond-shaped field pierced with shaded openings, he mimics the effect of collage, in which scraps of paper and fabric might be glued to a surface then painted or left untouched. He playfully extends the green textile’s decorative pattern of red dots onto the rim of the platter. Through subtle subversions of mass and spatial relationships, he transforms a traditional still-life motif into a two-dimensional abstraction.(February 6 –May 2, 2004)(November 12, 2004 – March 5, 2005)
