Géricault set this pair of horses harnessed to a loaded cart beneath a painted sign that announces the entrance to a tavern. Hardworking draft horses became one of his favorite themes after he traveled to England in 1820 to exhibit his monumental history painting, The Raft of the Medusa. Here the horses’ dappled coats and heavy hooves mimic the colors of the urban landscape and enhance the romantic gloom of the brewery yard, a familiar site in London in the 1800s.(December 16, 2016 – July 2, 2017)
