  • African Venus for Double Take

The African Venus, one of Charles Henri Joseph Cordier’s ethnographic busts, represents one of the racial types commonly depicted in his body of work. Dr. Julia Jordan-Zachery, professor of Public and Community Service Studies and director of Black Studies, Providence College and Patricia Barbeito, professor of American Literatures at RISD look closely at Cordier’s African Venus and discuss its historical context, concepts of otherness, and the gaze when representing women of color in works of art.

Double Takes feature two specialists offering their views on single objects with a focus on artistic process, social context, and the ever-evolving meanings of art.
