Dirt Palace Public Projects presents Siboney by Joiri Minaya and VAGABOND by Lani Asuncion in the exhibit Repair and Design Futures. Minaya and Asuncion are two of the time-based artists in the multifaceted exhibition, Ruffles, Repair & Ritual: the Fine Art of Fixing.

“Siboney is a performance in two parts and a mural painting. The first part of Siboney is compiled in a video that documents the process of copying the tropical pattern of a found piece of fabric on a museum wall, juxtaposed with subtitles that gather ideas around the piece. In the process, the collection of the museum (Centro León in Santiago, D.R.) was explored and a dialogue was formed between Siboney and a painting by Vela Zanetti of a dancing mulatta, which appears in the video. Once the mural is finished after around a month of work, I wet my body and rub myself against the wall, transforming the mural, while an adaptation of the song “Siboney” by Connie Francis is playing. This is documented in a second video, which is shown next to the first one, synchronized with it. The complete installation of Siboney has been acquired through the award of the XXV Concurso Eduardo León Jimenes by the Centro León in Santiago, Dominican Republic.” - Joiri Minaya  joiriminaya.com

“VAGABOND is an exploration of the idea of home and dedicated to my mother Trish Waters.  it is about the displacement among Americans and the condition of disconnection immigration places on a people. The viewer is brought from below, into a constructed Kiva, and out again moving beyond the horizon of the frame. The videos are shot in White Sands Missile Range and Pecos, New Mexico. Ruffles, Repair & Ritual: The Fine Art of Fixing celebrates the extensive renovation of the Wedding Cake House into a cultural facility that will support an Artist in Residence program and expansion of the Dirt Palace, a feminist art space going strong in Providence since 2000. Ruffles, Repair & Ritual: The Fine Art of Fixing opened on May 18, 2019, exhibiting 150 artists to honor the 150th anniversary of the house being built.
