Welcome to the RISD Museum 2023–2024 Year in Review, a summary of our activities for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024. This report is just one of the many ways we measure and summarize our work, and we welcome your feedback.
We’re pleased to show the ways in which the RISD Museum has had an impact on our campus, on our visitors, and within our community over the past year. At the RISD Museum, we have a special approach to engaging with art and design. We aim to make creativity accessible, to foster hands-on learning, and to encourage visitors to see art not just as objects on a wall but as gateways to understanding our world and ourselves. We work to connect the dots between art, design, and everyday life in ways that inspire and provoke thought.
In addition to the work you’ll see highlighted in the following pages, members of the RISD Museum staff also embarked on a process to consider and plan for the museum’s strategic direction for the years to come. That plan will be fully revealed in the coming months but much of the foundation work—including extensive hours of research and conversation with a myriad of constituent groups—was completed in FY 2024. Our vision is ambitious. We see a future where art and design drive positive change, where community dialogue is essential, and where creativity thrives. We envision a world where the RISD Museum serves as a hub for creativity, a place where everyone feels empowered to learn, explore, and imagine a more inclusive and sustainable world.
We're embracing opportunities to enhance our impact. We're actively working to strengthen our community connections, broaden our focus to embrace more design, refresh our gallery experiences, and amplify awareness of the museum's unique offerings. I look forward to sharing the new direction the museum will be heading that is built upon the solid foundation of the museum’s rich history.
