John Coddington

Cup

John Coddington, silversmith American, 1690-1743
Cup, ca. 1715
Silver
Height: 10.2 cm (4 inches)
Gift of Mrs. Murray S. Danforth 36.005

  • Fine silver was the ultimate luxury in America until well after the Revolutionary War. Silver-smiths in colonial cities developed techniques for decorating the precious metal to its best advantage, but this cup is one of very few pieces of early Rhode Island silver with such elaborate adornment. Fluting around the base and punched ornament around the middle create a rich effect that resembles sophisticated English silver of the same date. The cup is one of a small number of surviving pieces marked by silversmith John Coddington, grandson of Rhode Island’s first governor, William Coddington
