The stems of the clematis are strong and pliant, like the ways of old
The words tieh shin miao mean "iron line," referring to the stem and also the name of the flower "tieh shin" (tessen in Japanese), or clematis. The last two characters also mean a Chinese ink-brush technique by the same name.
