Eagles-a symbol of strength and power since ancient times-were often featured in pendant designs beginning in the Renaissance. This example from the 1700s possesses classical traits, featuring a bird with outstretched wings of gold decorated with detailed enamelwork, its talons wrapped around a branch. Embellished with colored stones and irregularly shaped baroque pearls, the eagle is suspended from an enameled crown, suggesting royal connections.
