K-12 Virtual Visit

Katsushika Hokusai, Under the Great Wave, off Kanagawa, ca.1829-1833

Students will explore Katsushika Hokusai’s Under the Great Wave, off Kanagawa, a Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print from the 1830s, examining its visual elements, symbolism  and social context. Students will learn about the structure and history of haikus, drawing connections between the form of haikus and woodblock printing. Students will use their brainstorming while observing Hokusai’s print to write a haiku.
