Zynsky is internationally regarded as one of the most innovative voices in studio glass. Lucente is a vibrant example of her signature filet de verre (net of glass) technique, whereby she fuses thousands of intensely colored hair-thin threads of glass together on a flat surface and then allows them to “slump” (sag) into a bowl shaped mold. The colors undulate, evoking feathers or flames or woven textiles. In the artist’s words, “Glass thread is like a flat canvas—I paint with it. And it’s incredibly tactile—I sculpt with it. I do things with it I could never do with blown glass.” Zynsky’s layering technique has a painterly quality that is unique within the glass medium. Here, the exterior wash of green and yellow threads gives a misty appearance to the oranges and reds seen through it.(February 11 –April 24, 2005)(June 18 –October 10, 2004)
