Guidelines for installations: Chace Center Lobby

Guidelines for installations inside the Museum in the Chace Center Lobby (wall between escalator exit and door to RISD/WORKS)

It is necessary to maintain the safety and security of Museum visitors and works of art. Please take the following into consideration:

  • Installations must comply with Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design requirements
  • Installations cannot extend more than 12 inches from the wall
  • No toxic materials, open flames, unsealed liquids (such as running water), animals, organic matter (including wood, plants, or dirt), or edible materials will be permitted
  • Potentially flammable materials will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if alternative materials or fire retardants are required
  • No work may be suspended from the ceiling
  • Installations may not obstruct or be attached to Museum signage, security devices, smoke detectors, sprinklers, or sprinkler hardware
  • HVAC vents may not be blocked
  • Small pieces that can be knocked over or stolen must be secured and/or stabilized
  • Floor pieces that might be tripped over and pieces with sharp or projecting edges will be reviewed with particular attention to safety and feasibility
  • Methods of hanging or fastening will be determined in consultation with Museum staff
  • Ambient sound that does not disturb staff or intrude on visitors’ experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis
