About
A string sextet composed of Brown University Students performs Arnold Schoenberg's, Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) (1899).
The piece is based on a poem by German poet Richard Dehmel. The five sections correspond roughly to the five stanzas of the poem. Schoenberg was an Austrian Jew who was accused of writing degenerate music by the Nazis, and fled to America in 1934. He wrote Verklate Nacht in his 20s, and it was rejected by the Vienna Music Society because of its use of a ninth chord, considered impermissibly dissonant.
