Conversation
About
In conjunction with RISD's Gelman Student Exhibitions Gallery exhibit, {re}position, curators, Namrata Dhore (BArch RISD 2021), Jisu Yang (BArch RISD 2021), and Cherry Yang (BArch RISD 2020), invite you to a conversation about inclusive practices in art and design.
"{re}position is a point of entry into a conversation that addresses how a western canonized pedagogy has impacted our positionality as artists and designers and gives individuals a space to reflect on the ways they have engaged with their non-western narratives.
We hope to spark a conversation that will allow for both students and faculty to seriously assess how each department has been or could be providing space for an inclusive practice of art and design. As students, we believe that one way a department can begin to become radically inclusive is by taking a close look at the existing curricula that is offered and beginning to edit it collaboratively with students and the faculty. We are hosting a discussion to engage with the existing pedagogies of art and design at RISD and to collectively reflect on how we can begin to actively make decisions and take actions towards this collective goal."
Large group discussions will be mixed with small group conversations. The event is free and open to all students, faculty and the public.
In preparation for the event, these are some questions that we have been developing:
1. Have you actively tried to make changes to the academic system (i.e. helping edit curricula)? How have these changes been perceived by the faculty/department?
2. What does the process of making the curriculum more inclusive look like?
3. How do we develop an accountability system to measure our progress?
