About
Leaders in the American silver industry, the Providence-based Gorham Manufacturing Company became the largest producer of silver in the world with innovative designs that retained traditional metalsmithing handwork while embracing mechanization, technology and cutting-edge production processes. Elizabeth Williams, David and Peggy Rockefeller Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, presents a digital introduction of varied and multi-disciplined themes and subjects for classroom and studio connections featured in this major exhibition, Designing Innovation: The Gorham Manufacturing Company 1850-1970, opening May 2019. The exhibition includes wide-ranging design aesthetics and techniques, pioneering industrial practices and philosophies, modern manufacturing facilities designed for workflow, cultural and social factors impacting the market, and the trajectory of the design process from idea to object.
