Gallery Talk
About
Chen Ming, Liu Baoxiang, and Lu Min, expert woodblock printers and carvers from the studio of Rongbaozhai (Studio of Glorious Treasures) in Beijing, China, discuss the works and tools on view in the Rockefeller Japanese Print Gallery. Rongbaozhai began as a paper and stationary shop founded over 300 years ago, and its woodblock printing department continues the tradition of composite block multicolor prints on silk and paper. It currently employs thirty printers, eight carvers, and five transformers who represent the highest level of skill in Muban shuiyin douban, the watermark composite woodblock technique.
This gallery talk will be preceded by a demonstration of woodblock printing in Benson Hall (first floor lithography studio) from 1 to 3 pm.
