Narragansett Tribe Two-Spirit teenager Sherenté Mishitashin Harris (RISD Brown Dual Degree 2023) participates in traditional dance competitions, but faces bias and discrimination for defying traditional gender roles. Being Thunder, directed by Stephanie Lamorre, is a stunning observational documentary about a courageous and genderqueer Indigenous teenager who boldly challenges a world bound by binary gender roles.
The documentary Being Thunder, directed by Stephanie Lamorré, follows Narragansett Tribal member and Two-Spirit teen Sherenté Mishitashin Harris (RISD Brown Dual Degree 2023). A genderqueer person, Harris participates in traditional dance competitions, but faces bias for defying traditional gender roles. Harris shines through as a role model for youth worldwide to live as their authentic selves with tenacity and grace
The screening, presented in collaboration with newportFILM, will be followed by a conversation with Sherenté Mishitashin Harris, Chloe Gardiner of Tomaquag Museum, and Angelo Baca, Assistant RISD Professor in the History, Philosophy, and the Social Sciences department.
