About
In 1966, Andy Warhol staged a multimedia performance featuring the Velvet Underground and Nico. This performance and those that followed, titled "The Exploding Plastic Inevitable" (EPI), consisted of live musical performances and screenings of Warhol's films. EPI toured the United States for a year before ended by a series of calamities.
The Velvet Underground and Nico
See the Velvet Underground rehearse at The Factory in preparation for an upcoming performance. This documentary film, directed by Andy Warhol, appears to have been produced with the intention of projecting it behind the band during the "Exploding Plastic Inevitable." However, the rehearsal is interrupted by the arrival of New York City police officers responding to a noise complaint.(1966/65 mins./black and white/sound/not rated)
Salvador Dalí
This silent film, directed by Andy Warhol, was also intended for projection behind the Velvet Underground during EPI performances—and includes Warhol's original "Screen Test" of the mustachioed Surrealist master. The film ends with artists Gerard Malanga and Mary Woronov performing their EPI S&M dance routine for Warhol's camera.(1966/25 mins./black and white/silent/not rated)
