Visual Culture in Freud's Vienna
About
Mary Bergstein, PhD, professor emerita in RISD’s Theory and History of Art and Design Department (THAD), will be presenting a lecture based on the materials and findings in her recently published book, Visual Culture in Freud's Vienna: Science, Eros, and the Psychoanalytic Imagination (Bloomsbury, 2024) with a Q & A to follow moderated by Agnieszka Taborska, senior critic in THAD.
Visual Culture in Freud's Vienna shows how photography and film in turn-of-the-century Vienna (the birthplace of psychoanalysis) not only reflected modernist ideas already in force, but helped to bring into being what might be referred to as a “psychoanalytic imagination.”
Free. Registration for this in-person program is requested.
This event is presented in collaboration by the RISD Museum, RISD’s Theory and History of Art and Design Department, and the Fleet Library at RISD.
