Making Prints with Helen Frankenthaler
About
Join us for a discussion with Bill Goldston and Shaye Remba as they reflect on Helen Frankenthaler’s time in the print shops at Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) and Mixografia. Megan Foster, master printer and Graduate Program Director for Printmaking at RISD, will moderate the discussion that will focus on prints in the RISD Museum collection and new gifts from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation.
Bill Goldston is the co-director of Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE) in Bay Shore, New York where he began working as a printer in 1969. Noted for his technical experimentation he soon took a leadership role in the shop and had a long relationship working with Helen Frankenthaler. Tatyana Grosman founded ULAE in 1957 publishing lithographs with the major young artists of the time. When Goldston took over the business in 1982, he invited a new generation of artists to work in an expanded range of techniques and the shop continues to be a major hub for experimentation.
Shaye Remba is the director of Mixografia, a fine art printer and publisher based in Los Angeles with roots in his grandfather’s commercial printing business in Mexico City. Nearly 50 years ago, Shaye and his father Luis Remba developed the Mixografia printing technique, which allows artists to create three-dimensional prints. Mixografia has produced over 600 editions by 90 some artists, as they continue to develop new machinery and techniques that expand the possibilities of printmaking.
Megan Foster earned her BFA from RISD and her MFA from Columbia University. Before joining the faculty at RISD, Foster taught at The City College of New York where she was the head of Printmaking and director of the MFA program. She was also master printer at the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies and is co-founder of Moonlight Editions.
