The institute on July 9, 10 and 11 looks closely at works of design from the ancient past to the present to explore how key objects solved specific problems by applying innovative ideas, processes and technologies. Participants will examine furniture, vessels, and garments to enhance the integration of material culture in their subject areas and will be able to adapt the methods and ideas explored for use in teaching. The workshop is relevant for educators who teach art, math, science, history and English and are interested in interdisciplinary approaches to works of art and design for both personal growth and for application in teaching. Sessions include gallery discussions, presentations by experts and practitioners, hands-on workshops, and lesson development. We encourage cross-disciplinary teams of educators interested to attend together.
The colloquium on July 12 introduces participants to the fundamentals of STEAM, with a focus on learning and teaching in selected disciplines at RISD through studio visits and discussions with faculty, staff, and students. Ample time will be available for networking and sharing.
