Demo & Discourse
About
Part of Locally Made's One Room.
In Demo & Discourse, artists, designers, and experts from across disciplines and mediums share examples of their work and talk about process.
Through the use of printed material, a small table top press, and lots of discourse, I will present a brief history of, and my fascination with, letterpress printing and its revival over the last two decades. How this medium is used in the workings of my own studio process will be the focus of the talk. -Dan Wood
Free with museum admission.
Dan Wood is an artist and printer living in Providence, Rhode Island. After a brief stint studying history at McGill University in Montreal, he received a BFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1994, and has continued his education in printing ever since, learning the craft of offset lithographic and letterpress printing in commercial print shops from Washington, D.C. to Providence, Rhode Island. He established Garbaszawa Press in 1994, and re-inaugurated it as DWRI Letterpress in 2003 as Rhode Island's first (in a few decades at least...) letterpress only print shop to work collaboratively with other artists and designers. He has shown his own work nationally and internationally, and is represented in private and public collections, including the print collections of the New York Public Library, the Iraq National Library (2016), and the RISD Museum of Art, among others. And his shop can now print on pencils!
