Summer Institute
About
"Delve into artifacts and works of art to unpack both canonical and neglected cultural narratives. Examine the intercultural aspects of particular works from the perspectives of makers and consumers, educators, and students. Learn how artworks offer worldviews that resonate across time and place, and discover how you can use them to engage your students. Join a reflective community of educators to expand your resource materials and grow best-practices for your own teaching contexts.
In addition to supporting participants' use of RISD Museum objects as primary sources in both museum and classroom contexts, the Summer Institute will focus on how to thoughtfully integrate the perspectives of multilingual and multicultural learners by attending to the variety of cultural and linguistic experiences these learners bring to their experiences of art and design. Central to the workshop will be the exploration of our positions as educators in relation to our students and educational environments. We will consider how to incorporate museum works into existing lessons, and through hands-on investigations, we will refine our approaches, strategies, and use of content to reflect the complex identities of our students.
The institute is designed for educators from different disciplines and grade levels and will simultaneously develop the thinking skills and habits of mind that are central to educators' different subject areas.
The cost of the workshop is $150 ($75 for current graduate students). Lunch is provided.
