Sean Nesselrode Moncada, PhD, Associate Professor in RISD’s Theory and History of Art and Design Department, discusses his recent publication Refined Material: Petroculture and Modernity in Venezuela, winner of the Association of Latin American Art's 2024 ALAA-Arvey Foundation Book Award.
In Refined Material, Nesselrode Moncada explores the integral relationship between the global oil industry and the celebrated rise of geometric abstraction, kinetic art, and modern architecture in midcentury Venezuela. Nesselrode Moncada will be in conversation with Agustín Díez Fischer, PhD, Professor of Art History at the University of Buenos Aires and Director of the Centro de Estudios Espigas (Espigas Research Center).
