Modern and Contemporary Galleries

For this piece, Fred Wilson digitally reproduced an 1863 lithograph depicting a camp of the Sixth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, a Union army infantry stationed in Suffolk, Virginia, during the American Civil War. Wilson placed a translucent cover sheet on top of the reproduction, blurring all details except for what is seen through a hole cut in the lower left corner. Here a Black woman is pictured hanging laundry—her presence literally on the fringe of the composition—revealing the habitual invisibility of Black women’s efforts in American history.
