Label copy

Indispensable for writing and painting, ink
was a treasured material in the Chinese scholar’s studio. Molded from pine soot
mixed with glue made from ox hide or fish skin, the finest ink sticks were
stamped with elaborate designs and gilded. These ink sticks bear the mark of
the Jiaqing emperor (Jiaqing nian zhi
嘉慶年製) and belong to a set made to
commemorate the imperial gardens. The names of the specific sites are inscribed
on one side, with a view of that location presented on the other side.
