Label copy

Delacroix accompanied a diplomatic mission to Morocco in 1832, and the experience had a profound influence on his artistic development. He filled many albums with sketches annotated with observations about color and light. On one excursion, he encountered a group of travelers on Arabian horses as they approached a valley. The scene was reimagined by Delacroix in Paris more than 20 years later, recalling the fragility of the sole woman on horseback. Loose brushstrokes create a flickering effect of movement and light across the painting’s surface.
