Tradition and Innovation in American Watercolors

January 27 - April 11, 1999

Demuth's cubistic rendition of a Provincetown beach scene is kaleidoscopic in its use of shifting planes of flat color. The contour of the figures is carefully respected through the controlled application of thin watercolor washes, each blotted and dried before the next application of a proximate color. Demuth purposely chose to work on thin sheets of paper that would buckle dramatically under the pooling paint.
