Label copy

Designing with concrete, engineered wood composite board, steel, and granite, Samuel Ross coated and fired this stool’s heavy-duty components with turmeric, honey, and milk. He explains, “[T]hese organic materials speak of past hands, processes, gestures, and carry memory, intentions, and philosophies from the heartland in which they originate.”

Ross’s work links ideas related to the body, material, meaning, and memory. He fuses visual elements of historical West African furniture design and post-industrial Western design, exploring not only material composition, but also how the human body interacts within the built and natural worlds.

–Elizabeth A. Williams, David and Peggy Rockefeller Curator of Decorative Arts and Design
