Black-topped red ware pots were formed from coils of clay smoothed by hand or with a paddle and anvil. By manipulating the firing conditions, Egyptian potters oxidized the iron-rich clay, producing its characteristics bright red color. To create the black-topped effect, the pot was inverted and placed in sawdust or ash to cut off the oxygen supply around the rim.
