Label copy

Portrayed here is the bodhisattva Jizo, a deity who appears in numerous Buddhist texts. Standing on clouds and wearing robes ornamented with gold, a wish-granting jewel in one hand and a staff in the other, Jizo inspires awe. This depiction derives from images of the Amida Buddha descending with bodhisattvas to welcome the souls of the deceased and guide them to the Pure Land.

As one who postponed enlightenment to remain in the human realm and guide others, Jizo is a benevolent figure who conveys compassion and offers hope of salvation.
