Modern and Contemporary Galleries

This bowl, formed of circles and inverted cones, embody the Modernist approach of unity of form. From 1919 to 1921, Margarete Heymann-Marks Löbenstein studied as one of the first female students at the Weimar Bauhaus, an innovative art and design school. She was trained by artists and craftsmen who emphasized both the visual and technical merits of functional works, and saw themselves as creators of an aesthetic free from tradition, abel to explore new materials and forms compatible with mass production.

In 1923, Marks and her first husband, Gustav Löbenstein, established the Haël-Werkstätten workshop, where she achieved international recognition designing ceramics with bold shapes and subtle, elegant ornamentation.
