Vibrant patches of color are screened by dark trees in this view of textile mills on Brandywine Creek, which flows between southeastern Pennsylvania and Wilmington, Delaware. Sunlight flashes in the foreground, leading the eye along a low stone wall.

After graduating from high school in the early 1930s, Edward Loper was hired by the Federal Art Project to render drawings of decorative art and folk art objects for the Index of American Design. He developed his skills as a painter independently, studying paintings at the Philadelphia Art Museum and the Barnes Foundation. In 1946 three of Loper’s paintings were shown at the RISD Museum in the exhibition The Negro Artist Comes of Age. One of these works was Backyards, illustrated below.
