Exhibition History

Ancient Greek and Roman Galleries

When in use, this candelabrum would have had a candle attached to each of the four prongs. The stand was most likely made in several parts, each solid-cast by lost-wax method and then soldered together. In ancient times, this candelabrum would have featured a ecorative bronze finial, either a small statuette or a pair of figures, at the center of the four rongs. Although many types of such figures are known, athletes and warriors seem to have been the most popular subjects. The inside of the saucer bears an inscription in Etruscan dedicating it to the deity Lurs, about whom little is known.
