Label copy

In this amusing group portrait, two Englishmen perform an impromptu concert in view of Rome’s Pyramid of Cestius. The central figure, Mr. Cook, awkwardly bows the cello, accompanied by the Rev. Dr. William Drake, who plays the flute with confidence. The reactions of their companions are polarized: at left Mr. John Woodyeare listens politely, while Sir Charles Turner covers his ears. The artist appears to be poking fun at his countrymen as they embrace the fashions and entertainment of their Italian hosts.

In the 1700s, young English aristocrats visited the great cities of Europe to expand their cultural awareness. Rome was the culmination of this Grand Tour-a place where ancient monuments brought classical education to life. Privileged men lingered there, visiting art collections, sitting for portraits, and often meeting up with others of their own social class.
