This casket may have played a part in an elaborate Italian marriage ritual, when gifts from a groom to his bride were paraded through the streets in a small jewelry box. Formed by molding pastiglia-a fine, plaster-like material-onto wood, these decorations recall more costly examples carved from ivory or bone. The sides of the casket feature historical, mythological, biblical, and literary scenes: the torture of the Roman general Marcus Atilius Regulus, the heroism of the legendary Roman youth Gaius Mucius Scaevola and the biblical queen Esther, and the death of Lavinia from Virgil’s Aeneid.
