Modern and Contemporary Galleries

Influenced by Scandinavian design, Russel Wright’s American Modern tableware features a modernist sensibility with biomorphic forms in earth tones. Convenient starter sets could be purchased, bundling the perfect number of dishes for a family’s use. One of Wright’s core beliefs was the democratization of good design that was approachable and affordable.

Eva Zeisel continued this philosophy with her tableware designs. Her Century dinnerware line was made to be both elegant and durable, resistant to chipping and cracking. Pieces in this set feature a distinctive petal-shaped edge that serves as a built-in handle. When the dishes are stacked together, the effect is that of a blossoming flower. The Century line was manufactured in plain white or with decals, as seen on this set.
