Modern and Contemporary Galleries

An homage to his home state of Rhode Island, Steven Weinberg cast these objects from discarded buoys. Used to mark fishermen’s territories, the original buoys were impressed with names that indicated ownership and locations, such as Smith’s Cove, north of Narragansett Bay in Barrington.

Weinberg made molds of the buoys and cast them in lead-crystal glass. He then put the form through a metallization process, spraying it with molten metal and heating to fuse the metal to the glass body. The glass at the end of the buoy has been polished into a convex lens, allowing a glimpse into the corroded interior as if one were peering into the depths of the ocean.
