The chasuble is the outermost garment worn by clergy during Mass, and the most elaborately decorated. This example features richly embroidered applied panels on the orphrey (central border) depicting Saint Catherine with her attributes: the spiked wheel and the sword that executed her. The style of needlework is known as opus anglicanum (English work), a generic name for the elaborate silver and gold embroidery produced in medieval England in service of the church. Works like this one were typically made by professional embroiderers or nuns.
