Dutch artist Hendrik Goltzius painted this radiant devotional image using oil paint on copper. Best known as an engraver, Goltzius was intimately familiar with the smooth surface of the copper plate. Here he exploited its reflective effects with a jewel-toned palette, creating a portrait of Christ’s suffering prior to his crucifixion. Details of the broken reed staff he was beaten with and the crown of thorns he was forced to wear were intended to activate the viewer’s empathy.
