Label copy

In the Middle Ages, ivory was imported from Africa as a material for religious objects, including plaques that protected prayer books, like this example. Here Jesus is presented as the enthroned Christ, raising his right hand in blessing and holding in his left a scroll representing the New Testament. The rhythmic design and flat carving are stylistically related to medieval manuscript illustrations, and may also be observed on larger sculptures made around the same time.
